Solid-State Battery Breakthrough Promises 2-Hour Drone Flight Times

Researchers at MIT have achieved a landmark breakthrough in solid-state battery technology specifically optimized for drone applications. The new lithium-metal cells deliver an energy density of 520 Wh/kg — nearly three times that of current lithium-polymer batteries used in commercial drones.

In laboratory testing, a modified quadcopter equipped with the prototype cells achieved continuous flight times exceeding 115 minutes, compared to 38 minutes with conventional batteries. The cells also demonstrated superior performance in extreme temperatures, maintaining 92% capacity at -20°C where traditional batteries typically lose 40% or more.

Commercial production is expected to begin in late 2027 through a partnership with Samsung SDI. Initial applications will target industrial survey and mapping drones where extended endurance directly translates to larger area coverage per mission.
