Researchers at ETH Zurich have demonstrated a breakthrough in autonomous swarm coordination that enables fleets of 20+ drones to collaboratively map large areas without centralized control or human intervention. The decentralized algorithm dynamically assigns survey zones, manages collision avoidance, and adapts to individual drone failures in real-time.
In field tests covering 50 square kilometers of varied terrain, a 25-drone swarm completed a comprehensive photogrammetric survey in 3.5 hours — a task requiring 18 hours with a single drone. The system maintained consistent overlap coverage despite two drones experiencing mid-mission battery issues and automatically returning to base.
Commercial applications include disaster assessment, agricultural field scouting, mining site monitoring, and large-scale environmental surveys. Several drone software companies are integrating swarm capabilities into their platforms, with commercial availability expected by Q1 2027.
